Children who live permanently in Finland are subject to
compulsory education. Compulsory education begins the year
the child turns seven and lasts for nine years.
In basic
education, teaching, school healthcare, all study materials
and school meals are free. Sometimes transportation to and
from school is also free.
The City of Oulu Department of Education runs 37
basic education schools, two of which are for
children with special needs. The state-owned
Oulun normaalikoulu
and privately-owned Svenska
Privatskolan i Uleåborg,
Oulun
steinerkoulu and
Oulun Kristillinen Koulu are also located on Oulu.
