A six-year-old child who begins comprehensive school next
year has the right, in accordance with the parents’ choice,
to free preschool education provided by the local government.
Preschool education is provided for four hours each day.
Preschool complies with the work schedule of the schools.
What is preschool?
The preschool year is an important phase in a child’s life.
Preschool education supports the child’s individual learning
process and assists the child in their development into a
school pupil. Children learn through activities and by playing with
other children. Preschool follows its own curriculum which
is based on the national foundations.
Preschool and daycare
Participation in preschool is voluntary. If a family
requires childcare in addition to preschool, partial daycare
fees are charged (daily care lasting less than five hours)
which is 60 % of the family’s specified total daycare fee.
Whenever preschool lessons are not being provided (for
example, during the summer months) the whole day fee will be
charged.
Free preschool education is available to families with
children in private daycare centres where the local
government has made an agreement to obtain preschool
services.
The implementation of preschool
Preschool is primarily offered in daycare centres and in the
Mäntylä, Pikkarala and Sanginsuu schools, as well as in
conjunction with the Svenska Privatskolan, Oulun
Normaalikoulu, Merikartano school, Leinonpuisto school and
Lohipato school.
There are preschool groups in almost every daycare centre.
Groups are arranged when the required number of children
have been registered (a minimum of seven children).
A child needing special support is placed either in a
daycare centre preschool group, a small group or a daycare
centre support group.
Registration for preschool
You can use the same daycare application form used to apply
for a local government daycare centre placement for
preschool registration.
The registration form should be returned to the nearest
daycare centre or school that provides preschool education.
Six-year-olds in family daycare are provided with preschool
education in the nearest daycare centre.
