The sea, forests, rivers and countryside provide a fabulous contrast to the lively city that is known for its technology. This is my home.

The Oulu region is a highly populated urban area in the north of Finland and the centre of northern Scandinavia. Besides Oulu, the region comprises Haukipudas, Kiiminki, Oulunsalo and Yli-Ii. In 2013 the five will unite to create a new Oulu, the fifth biggest city in Finland. The vast area offers flexibility and alternatives for everyone’s life. The pleasant environment is created by a combination of the sea, three wide rivers, the countryside and urban culture. If you like the changing seasons, you can enjoy light, warm summers and cold, snowy winters in Oulu.

Oulu has the second busiest airport in Finland, and it takes less than an hour to fly to Helsinki. The expansion of Oulu Airport will make Oulu into an important air traffic hub and this will naturally increase the number of direct international flights. The Port of Oulu provides a sea route to the world, while the railway network keeps you connected to all parts of Finland. The future railway repairs in western Finland will speed up train travel. And let’s not forget the roads: the E4 takes you all the way to the Arctic Ocean.

Thanks to Finland’s second biggest multidisciplinary university and international companies Oulu has become a world-famous city of technology. Moreover, the creative region has inspired artists in quite original ways. The World Championships of one of the most demanding instruments in the world – the air guitar – are held in Oulu. My all-time favourite is, of course, Born to Be Wild.
